Computer System Back Up and Running

Well my “new” older computer system is now up as my main system for a while. It is a lot slower than my other system and is taking some getting use to. Maybe it was a message for me to slow down, who knows besides GOD. I think I recovered most of what was lost. Only “big” loss was some recent pictures of the kids, thank GOD, and I mean that, that it didn’t happen after the baby was born as those type of pictures are irreplaceable. I will make sure to make copies from the camera card on those before I trust any computer system.

Last couple of days have been really nice days. It was nice to take time after the gym yesterday to visit with my dad. As for the gym, after a few minutes on the elliptical trainer machine, my legs and butt are hurting today.

So over all things are good. 8-) ^MM

Youngest in class get ADHD label

By Liz Szabo, USA TODAY

Nearly 1 million children may have been misdiagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, not because they have real behavior problems, but because they’re the youngest kids in their kindergarten class, researchers say.

Kids who are the youngest in their grades are 60% more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD than the oldest children, according to a study out today from Michigan State University, given exclusively to USA TODAY. A second study, by researchers at North Carolina State University and elsewhere, came to similar conclusions. Both are scheduled for publication in the Journal of Health Economics.

TEENS: 1/3 with ADHD drop out or delay graduation

About 4.5 million children have been diagnosed with ADHD, according to the studies.

Tylenol Use Linked to Asthma, Other Allergies in Teens

FRIDAY, Aug. 13 (HealthDay News) — Teens from around the world who regularly take acetaminophen, best known as Tylenol, were more than twice as likely to have asthma as teens who never take the over-the-counter pain and fever reducer, new research finds.

Taking acetaminophen was also linked to an increased chance of eczema and rhinoconjunctivitis, or allergic nasal congestion, in adolescents.

Because the study was epidemiological — meaning researchers asked teens to report after-the-fact how often they took acetaminophen — researchers said they can’t prove that acetaminophen helps cause asthma.

But the study is one of several in recent years that has linked acetaminophen usage during pregnancy or childhood to an increased risk of developing asthma.

“We cannot assume causation, but the association was found in widely different communities, with widely different patterns of illness and lifestyles,” said study author Dr. Richard Beasley, a professor of medicine at the Medical Research Institute of New Zealand. “When you put it together with all of the other studies, clearly there is [cause for concern].”

Nearly 323,000 children between the ages of 13 and 14 who were participating in the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood answered questionnaires about their use of acetaminophen and history of wheezing, nasal congestion and recurrent, itchy rashes.

Wright County Egg Conducts Nationwide Voluntary Recalls of Shell Eggs Because of Possible Health Risk

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – August 13, 2010 – The following statement was released by officials of Wright County Egg regarding the US Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) on-farm records review and egg testing for Salmonella.

Wright County Egg of Galt, Iowa is voluntarily recalling specific Julian dates of shell eggs produced by their farms because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis or arthritis.

Eggs affected by this recall were distributed to food wholesalers, distribution centers and foodservice companies in California, Illinois, Missouri, Colorado, Nebraska, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa. These companies distribute nationwide.

Eggs are packaged under the following brand names: Lucerne, Albertson, Mountain Dairy, Ralph’s, Boomsma’s, Sunshine, Hillandale, Trafficanda, Farm Fresh, Shoreland, Lund, Dutch Farms and Kemps. Eggs are packed in varying sizes of cartons (6-egg cartons, dozen egg cartons, 18-egg cartons) with Julian dates ranging from 136 to 225 and plant numbers 1026, 1413 and 1946. Dates and codes can be found stamped on the end of the egg carton. The plant number begins with the letter P and then the number. The Julian date follows the plant number, for example: P-1946 223.

There have been confirmed Salmonella enteritidis illnesses relating to the shell eggs and traceback investigations are ongoing.

Wright County Egg is fully cooperating with FDA’s investigation by undertaking this voluntary recall. Our primary concern is keeping Salmonella out of the food supply and away from consumers. As a precautionary measure, Wright County Egg also has decided to divert its existing inventory of shell eggs to a breaker, where they will be pasteurized to kill any Salmonella bacteria present.

Consumers who believe they may have purchased these shell eggs should not eat them but should return them to the store where they were purchased for a full refund. This recall is of shell eggs only. Other egg products produced by Wright County Eggs are not affected. Consumers with questions should visit www.eggsafety.org9.

Our farm strives to provide our customers with safe, high-quality eggs – that is our responsibility and our commitment.

Total destruction

After closer inspection, I noticed that one of my drives has a broken connector, whether that caused a short circuit or what I do not know. What I do know is that my external hard drives are okay, but the bad news is all four of my internal hard drives, including two Western Digital Raptors are fried. Over 650GB of data lost. Well almost. I had most of my crucial stuff backed up on my 1TB external as well as Mozy. I did lose some pictures and stuff within the last few days that I finally downloaded off my camera.

And before anyone suggest it, yes I am sure the drives are dead. When I hook them up to a good power source the will not spin, but all will get hot smelling, with one that will start stinking badly, which is the smell I think I was smelling this morning.

I thought of a lightning strike, but I have an UPC and all my other systems hooked up are okay as well as my scanners and all other electronics.

Just a freak occurrence. I’m glad I invested in Mozy. Still sad and frustrating. :-| ^MM

Computer died

My main system died overnight. I came home this morning and it was off, so I tried to restart it and it would start but no BIOS screen, no video output, no hard drive activity, nothing. So I took off the processor & heat sink and the thermal paste was hard and cooked. Last night I put on a new graphic intensive screen saver and I have been having random restart problems on and off for a few months. I thought it was a program, but in the end I think it was that the processor was getting cooked. It is supposed to have a thermal overload, but not sure what is actual problem. All I do know is that the processor and motherboard are all so outdated I can not buy replacement parts and I don’t even know what is wrong. It could be the processor, in which I would be screwed because can not replace too old. It could be the Motherboard, again no replacement to match processor so I’m screwed. It could be in the power supply in which case I would have to spend $50 to find out then if it wasn’t I’m out $50. I do smell something burnt or hot, which is not good. So until tax time next year I’m going to buy a couple of Thermaltake BlacX Duets to access my hard drives and make this system my new main system and hope like hell it holds up.
So in the mean time it may be a week or so until I get things situated and fixed. So who knows what will happen as I also need to get my lawnmower fixed now that the part has finally come in. ^MM

Crate of whisky opened after 100 years buried in Antarctica

WELLINGTON, NEW ZEALAND—A crate of Scotch whisky that was trapped in Antarctic ice for a century was finally opened Friday — but the heritage dram won’t be tasted by whisky lovers because it’s being preserved for its historic significance.

The crate, recovered from the Antarctic hut of renowned explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton after it was found there in 2006, has been thawed very slowly in recent weeks at the Canterbury Museum in Christchurch on New Zealand’s South Island.

The crate was painstakingly opened to reveal 11 bottles of Mackinlay’s Scotch whisky, wrapped in paper and straw to protect them from the rigours of a rough trip to Antarctica for Shackleton’s 1907 Nimrod expedition.
