Can I Have Laser Eye Surgery If I Have Diabetes?

Tim Harwood, MC Optom

Aug 16, 2010

Laser eye surgery is becoming increasingly popular as more and more people look to free themselves from their glasses or contact lenses. There are two main types of laser eye surgery, Lasik and Lasek. The vast majority of people choose to have Lasik because it has a far quicker and more comfortable recovery period. Most people can return to work and normal activities within 48 hours of having Lasik, whereas it can take up to a week to recover from Lasek surgery. In some instances your surgeon may insist that you have Lasik–if, for example, you are involved in contact sports.

Can people with diabetes have laser eye surgery? The simple answer is “It depends.” The concerns are as follows:

Red light camera passes first reading

MUSCATINE, Iowa —The Muscatine City Council unanimously approved the first reading of an ordinance Thursday that would allow cameras at key intersections to cite speeders and those who run red lights.

The vote was 6-0, with Councilman Bob Bynum absent.

Rich Kosina, chief technology officer with the company that invented the automated traffic control system 52 years ago, Massachusetts-based Gatso USA, said red-light violations at some of the six intersections surveyed — particularly at Houser Street and Cedar Street — were “quite high.”

The time that the light remains yellow at that intersection — three seconds — may need to be increased, he said.

Kosina said the red-light surveys were completed in early June. A separate speed study conducted by the Muscatine Police Department occurred in July.

The red-light surveys were taken for three hours in the morning, two hours in mid-day, and three hours in the evening — peak hours for traffic.

The speed survey was cut off after 400 cars passed through each intersection.

State gives $924,000 to CGS Tires

CHARLES CITY — The Iowa Economic Development Board (IEDB) and the Iowa Department of Economic Development (IDED) approved incentives for eight companies to bring more than 260 jobs to nine Iowa cities, including Charles City.

The IEDB awarded $924,000 from the Grow Iowa Values Fund (GIVF) to CGS Tires US Inc. to support 154 of 192 jobs to be created as the company brings an agricultural and industrial tire manufacturing facility to Charles City.

It represents the first manufacturing facility in North America for parent company CGS, based in the Czech Republic, according to Gov. Chet Culver’s office.

The $43.8 million project will reconfigure the former Winnebago Industries manufacturing facility to accommodate the production of market radial tractor tires, harvester tires and other tire products.

Arizona escapee, alleged accomplice arrested

(CNN) — A tip from an observant forest ranger led to the arrest of an Arizona prison escapee and an alleged accomplice who had been on the run since last month, authorities said late Thursday.

John McCluskey and Casslyn Mae Welch were arrested at a campground on the edge of Apache and Sitgreaves National Forests in Springerville, Arizona, according to U.S. Marshal David Gonzales.

A park ranger noticed an unattended fire at a campsite and spotted a suspicious car backed into some trees, authorities said.

A license plate check determined it matched the description of one recently stolen in New Mexico, near where a couple was murdered.

McCluskey and Welch are suspected in the killings of the couple whose bodies were found in their burned out camper this month, according to authorities.

A SWAT team from the Apache County Sheriff’s Department was called to the campground site, where they arrested McCluskey and Welch, Gonzales said.

2 NASCAR Races Could Pump $18M Into Newton

NEWTON, Iowa — A second NASCAR race now planned at the Iowa Speedway in Newton could pump an additional $8 million into the area economy.

“I’ve got to tell you man, I woke up this morning and I cannot believe we got a second date,” said Rusty Wallace.

Speedway officially announced Wednesday that the track would host two NASCAR Nationwide races during the 2011 season.

The Rusty Wallace-designed track cost $70 million to build and transformed a cornfield into a major attraction for racing fans.

Just last month, 56,000 fans from 26 states filled the speedway seats to capacity for one NASCAR Nationwide series race.

Federal government turns up heat against Joe Arpaio

PHOENIX – The federal government is turning up the heat on Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

ABC News has now obtained a Department of Justice letter sent to Arpaio and his attorneys demanding that the sheriff comply with requests from federal investigators.

In the letter, the Justice Department has laid down their exasperation with Arpaio and his reluctance to cooperate with an ongoing discrimination investigation into how the department treats Hispanics with limited English proficiency at some of the country’s jail facilities.

The Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division sent the letter on August 3, 2010 to Arpaio’s lawyers about repeated document requests and asked that they comply with the requests by a deadline of August 17 or be subject to a civil lawsuit filed by the Department.

What I ordered to support system

I ordered a Thermaltake BlacX Duet for USB from Newegg.com, although it has external SATA capabilities, this system does not. My old system did and man was it fast, just like an internal drive. Then I also ordered 2 Western Digital Black Caviar 750GB hard drives from Amazon.com. The Western Digital Black Caviar drives are rated for better performance and durability. The WD Caviar Blue drives are a general purpose drive with a balance between noise and performance, where as the Black are noisy, but high performance. The WD Caviar Green drives are totally quiet, but suffer a bit of performance for the quietness.

So when I get done, I will have backups on 6 different drives, so I should be okay. I also have backup drives, older IDE drives, in ziploc bags in the fireproof safe, in case of a flood or fire. I have tried Mozy and Carbonite, but with my internet access out here and the volume of data I use, they can not keep up with the backing up, plus they slow down my system, especially now on this older system.
