KEOKUK, Iowa- Just before 8:00 Friday morning a building collapsed at 6th and Main in downtown Keokuk.

The building is the site of the former Green Tambourine music store.

When police arrived on the scene all they could see was a cloud of dust from the collapsed building.

KHQA’s Melissa Shriver was on the scene and spoke with neighbors to the east of the building who said it sounded like an earthquake when it fell.

But neighbors to the west said they didn’t hear anything, they just saw a large plume of smoke.

No one was inside the building at the time.

Melissa also spoke to a walker who passed by just minutes before who said they felt lucky to be alive.

Crews are now busy with debris removal and the search any possible victims.

The cause is under investigation but Keokuk police do not suspect any sort of explosion.

Police are asking people to stay clear of the area around the collapse so that they can clear away the debris as quickly and safely as possible.

Melissa will have full coverage of the collapse tonight on KHQA at 5, 6 and 10 and on right here on our website at Connect Tri-States.com
